Two people can work at hotels carrying the same IHG brand while having different employment relationships and different access to colleague systems.
IHG’s own programme materials acknowledge this structure.
Its Employee Room Benefit Programme refers to employees of IHG and related entities as well as qualifying employees working at IHG-system hotels that are owned, managed or franchised.
IHG University similarly says its hotel learning resources support colleagues at both managed and franchised hotels.
This explains why “all IHG employees use the same portal” is an unsafe assumption.
Brand Does Not Automatically Identify the Employer
An IHG-branded hotel’s flag tells guests which hospitality brand the property operates under.
It does not necessarily tell a colleague which legal organization employs them.
Franchised hotels can be operated by independent businesses while participating in IHG brand systems and programmes.
Programme Eligibility Can Be Wider Than Direct Corporate Employment
IHG’s Employee Room Benefit language is particularly instructive.
The programme can cover qualifying employees across different hotel relationships within the IHG System.
Therefore, a colleague might be eligible for certain IHG programmes even if their direct employer is a franchise operator.
MyHR Access Can Differ
IHG Careers explicitly anticipates that some current colleagues will not have MyHR access.
Those colleagues are told to use the external careers application route while identifying themselves as current IHG employees.
That official fallback demonstrates that MyHR access is not universal across every colleague context.
Learning Can Still Be Available
IHG University says team members at IHG-branded hotels automatically have access to its learning framework, including resources intended for both franchised and managed hotel colleagues.
The learning-access path, however, may differ by property and role.
Merlin ID May Still Matter for Benefits
IHG’s Employee Room Benefit programme references Merlin ID as one method of validating the colleague relationship and connecting it to an IHG One Rewards membership.
Colleagues without a Merlin ID are given a different manager-supported validation path.
Again, the system accommodates more than one employment/access model.
Ask the Property Before Assuming Something Is Broken
If a colleague cannot use a system that another IHG hotel employee uses, first determine:
- Who is the direct employer?
- Is the hotel franchised or managed?
- Is the programme available to that colleague population?
- Is manager activation required?
- Does the colleague normally receive MyHR access?
These questions often matter more than searching for another login URL.
