IHG’s Employee Room Benefit Programme reveals one of the most important distinctions in the Merlin ecosystem.
Eligible colleagues need an IHG One Rewards membership number, and IHG says that membership can be linked to a colleague’s Merlin ID for employee room-benefit access.
The fact that IHG describes a linking process shows that the two identifiers have different roles.
Merlin ID Represents the Colleague Side
IHG’s current employee-benefit page asks whether a colleague already has a Merlin ID.
That identifier is used to establish or connect colleague eligibility within the programme workflow.
A Merlin ID should not be assumed to be the same username used to make a normal hotel reservation.
One Rewards Represents the Loyalty and Booking Side
IHG One Rewards is the membership environment used for hotel reservations and loyalty activity.
IHG’s employee programme tells colleagues to begin with their Rewards membership number. Once eligibility is linked or activated, the employee rate can be booked through IHG’s consumer booking channels.
IHG One Pass similarly instructs users to use the IHG One Rewards app or IHG.com for bookings.
Why Linking Is Necessary
The employee travel workflow needs to connect two facts:
This person has an eligible colleague relationship.
and
This is the One Rewards account through which the eligible person will book.
The Merlin/Rewards linking step bridges those contexts.
Loyalty Connect Is Another Part of the Workflow
IHG says that a manager can also activate the Employee Room benefit through Loyalty Connect when appropriate.
This demonstrates that managers can have an administrative role in establishing programme eligibility.
It does not mean Loyalty Connect should be treated as an employee booking portal.
A Login Failure Can Happen on Either Side
When an employee cannot book an expected rate, first determine which layer is failing.
Merlin or eligibility problem
The colleague relationship may not be linked or validated as expected.
One Rewards problem
The member may have an issue accessing the Rewards account used for booking.
Programme-eligibility issue
The colleague may need employer or manager assistance.
Availability issue
The account may be valid while a particular rate is not available for a chosen hotel or date.
These are different problems.
Do Not Create Duplicate Accounts Casually
If an employee already has an established IHG One Rewards account, creating another account simply because the benefit is not appearing can make the situation more confusing.
Use current IHG instructions or official support to determine whether the existing membership needs linking.
Where the Booking Happens
Once eligible, IHG directs employee-rate booking to IHG.com or its mobile app.
That is another reason the Merlin ID and Rewards account should not be confused.
The colleague credential establishes one part of the relationship; the travel-booking environment handles another.
